About this course

For learners who finished the JavaScript and browser courses. In about 11 hours you will build a small HTTP API with Node's built-in modules, validate requests, return correct status codes, and test it with real requests on your own computer.

What you will be able to do

  • Build documented endpoints with appropriate HTTP methods and status codes.
  • Validate inputs and return useful, consistent errors.
  • Keep secrets on the server and test requests without a browser interface.

Course outline

Module 1: Run JavaScript on the server

3 lessons · 3 h

Use packages, scripts and environment variables without committing secret values.

  1. Run a JavaScript process outside the browser1 h
  2. Separate modules and control dependencies1 h
  3. Load configuration and resource files1 h

Module 2: Understand requests and responses

3 lessons · 3 h 30 min

Build routes and practice HTTP methods, JSON and status codes.

  1. Serve predictable JSON over HTTP1 h
  2. Parse route identifiers and query filters1 h
  3. Read a bounded JSON request body1 h 30 min

Module 3: Handle failures and test the API

3 lessons · 4 h 30 min

Return safe errors, test the API with real requests and hand it over with clear limits.

  1. Catch asynchronous failures without leaking internals1 h
  2. Test the API with real HTTP requests1 h 30 min
  3. Deliver and explain the directory API2 h
