Household Readiness

Build and demonstrate a practical household readiness binder spanning water, food, weather and communication decisions.

4 courses. One defined path.

Follow the required courses in order. Audit study is available with Academy membership; assessed enrollment adds evidence review and the program’s progression rules.

  • Household readiness plan
  • Water and sanitation decisions
  • Food, temperature and shelter records
  • Integrate the course evidence in a reviewed capstone.

Assessment & pacing

Each assessed lesson opens at least 2 days after the previous lesson is completed. Required assessment checkpoints also need approval before you continue.

Plan for about 22 weeks at 3 study hours per week, based on approximately 65 hours of course study. Allow extra time for revisions.

The minimum assessed practice period is 20 weeks. Studying faster does not bypass lesson waits or required approvals.

The assessed enrollment has a 260-day completion window from its recorded start. The clock pauses while submitted work waits for review. You can request a free extension if you need more time. Membership study remains self-paced while access is active. Paying or marking a lesson complete does not prove proficiency.

How an assessment passes

Each skill is scored from 0 to 4. You need at least 3 on every essential skill and at least 80% overall. Missing evidence must be resolved before approval. Feedback explains what to improve, and you can submit a revised attempt.

To earn the program award, complete the whole course bundle, required quiz passes, approved assignments, final project, and practice period. The school confirms the award separately.

Assessment 1 · portfolio

Household readiness plan

Make a household readiness binder with hazards, contacts, supplies and a practice plan. Send the binder and notes showing what you changed after a drill.

Detailed assignment instructions

Submit the authored binder: goals, local hazard table, decision flow, paper contacts/meeting plan, supply ledger, 72-hour kit plan, home repair list, care-continuity sheet and dated drill corrections. Redact private contact details.

See assessment criteria
  • Required result (35%) · essential
The binder contains the actual readiness-plan components.
  • Sound decisions (30%) · essential
Decisions reflect stated household needs and local hazards.
  • Evidence and checks (25%) · essential
Include a drill record and dated corrections.
  • Explanation and revision (10%)
    Explain a changed decision.

Water and sanitation decisions

Plan how your household would store and manage water during an interruption. Send your needs calculation, safety reference cards and a response to a changed advisory.

Detailed assignment instructions

Submit the authored needs calculation, source decisions, boiling/bleach reference card, storage ledger, emergency toilet plan and layered plan tested against a changing advisory. Use source-backed written/rehearsed evidence; do not conduct unsafe water experiments.

See assessment criteria
  • Required result (35%) · essential
The water plan covers continuity, storage and sanitation.
  • Sound decisions (30%) · essential
Treatment/source choices match the supplied advisory and reference guidance.
  • Evidence and checks (25%) · essential
Show calculations and a changed-advisory scenario.
  • Explanation and revision (10%)
    Explain a limitation or correction.

Assessment 3 · portfolio

Food, temperature and shelter records

Prepare food-safety and weather-readiness records. Send your temperature and storage notes, clothing and shelter plans, and safe practice records.

Detailed assignment instructions

Submit the actual food-temperature/leftover/outage binder evidence and warmth/weather binder: safe-heating plan, alarm checks, layered outfits, weather go/no-go card and tarp/shelter record. Use simulations only where the lesson permits.

See assessment criteria
  • Required result (35%) · essential
Both authored binder sections contain practical records.
  • Sound decisions (30%) · essential
Food/outage and heat/weather decisions follow the cited guidance.
  • Evidence and checks (25%) · essential
Provide temperature, alarm and practice/rehearsal records as applicable.
  • Explanation and revision (10%)

Assessment 4 · capstone · video evidence

Household disruption scenario: practical review

Record a safe practice drill for a household disruption. Send a YouTube walkthrough of your binder and explain your water, food, shelter and contact decisions.

Detailed assignment instructions

Provide a YouTube walkthrough of your redacted binder and a safe real or rehearsed household-disruption drill combining water, food, temperature/shelter and communication decisions. Explain an advisory change and stop/seek-help decisions. Do not drink untreated water, bypass food guidance or perform hazardous heating/fire demonstrations. An authorized human reviewer evaluates both scenario judgment and practical evidence.

See assessment criteria
  • Safe practice (35%) · essential
The authorized human reviewer confirms consent, supervision where required, safe scope and appropriate stop or withdrawal decisions. Unsafe or unapproved performance cannot pass.
  • Demonstrated task (30%) · essential
The walkthrough and drill integrate the four authored binder sections.
  • Scenario judgment (25%) · essential
Advisory, temperature, weather and communication decisions fit the scenario and source guidance.
  • Reflection (10%)
Explain a limitation, correction and sensible next practice step.
