The art

Grappling that teaches a child to stay calm under pressure

Jujitsu is the art of using leverage, balance, and timing instead of strength. Kids learn to fall safely first, then to throw, pin, and escape. Sport jujitsu adds the rules and scoring used in competition, so the Monday class is where our young competitors prepare for tournaments.

Because everything happens on the mat with a partner, jujitsu teaches control faster than any striking art. A child learns exactly how much pressure is enough and how to tap and reset. Nobody wins by hurting anyone.

Where it comes from

The jujitsu taught at Cloud Forest comes from the combative side of the Wei Family system and from Sifu Casey Martin's long work in American combat jujitsu. The kids program grew out of the adult combat jujitsu class as parents asked for a version their children could train.

What it does for you

Falling without fear

Break-falls are the first thing every child learns. It shows up on the playground, on bikes, and on ice.

Calm in a scramble

Being pinned and working an escape teaches a kid to breathe and think instead of panic.

Body awareness

Grappling builds core strength, balance, and grip in a way weights never will at this age.

A clear path to compete

Kids who want it can test themselves at our own tournaments and at regional sport jujitsu events.

What a class looks like

Warm-up on the mat: rolls, shrimping, break-falls. A technique of the day, shown by the instructor and drilled with a partner at low speed. Then positional games: start pinned, work to escape; start standing, work for the takedown. Light, supervised rounds close the class for the kids who are ready.

Your first visit

A t-shirt and athletic pants or shorts with no zippers, nails trimmed, water bottle. Bare feet on the mat. Your child will partner with an instructor or a senior student the first night.
